How Results Are Calculated

Last Updated: March 2026

This page explains how typing test results are evaluated on this platform. The scoring system follows widely accepted international typing test standards and is designed to provide a fair and consistent evaluation of typing speed, accuracy, and errors.

The algorithm analyzes the text typed by the user and compares it with the original paragraph provided in the test. Based on this comparison, several performance metrics such as Gross WPM, Net WPM, accuracy, and error counts are calculated.

1. Initial Parsing and Tokenization

When a typing test is completed or when the timer expires, the system compares two text inputs:

Original Content
The exact paragraph provided for the typing test.

Typed Content
The text entered by the user during the test.

Both pieces of text are first processed by splitting them into separate words. This is done by dividing the text at spaces so that each word becomes an individual element in an array.

This step allows the system to analyze each typed word against the corresponding word from the original paragraph.

2. Word-by-Word Comparison

After tokenization, the system compares the original words and the typed words one by one using their position in the sequence. For every position in the paragraph, one of the following outcomes is determined.

Correct Word
If the typed word exactly matches the original word (including case and punctuation), it is counted as a correct word and added to the total correct word count.

Incorrect Word (Spelling Error)
If a typed word exists at the same position but does not match the original word exactly, it is marked as an incorrect word. Each incorrect word counts as one error.

Skipped Word
If a word exists in the original paragraph but the user skipped it while typing, the system identifies it as a skipped word.

If the skipped word occurs in the middle of the paragraph where the user continued typing afterward, it is counted as an error. If the skipped words occur only because the user ran out of time and did not reach the end of the paragraph, those remaining words are treated as unattempted and do not count as errors.

Extra Word
If the user types more words than the paragraph actually contains, those additional words are marked as extra words. Each extra word counts as one error.

3. Character-Based Word Calculation

To ensure fairness, the system uses the international typing standard:

5 Characters = 1 Word

This method avoids unfair penalties that could occur if the paragraph contains unusually long or unusually short words. By using characters instead of physical word counts, typing speed remains consistent across different passages.

Key definitions used in the formulas include:

Total Characters Typed: The total number of characters typed by the user, including spaces.
Time Used (Minutes): The total duration of the test measured in minutes.
Total Errors: The sum of spelling errors, skipped words counted as errors, and extra words.

4. Gross WPM (Raw Typing Speed)

Gross Words Per Minute measures raw typing speed without considering errors.

Gross WPM = ROUND( (Total Characters Typed / 5) / Time Used )

This metric reflects how fast the user typed regardless of mistakes.

5. Net WPM (True Typing Speed)

Net WPM is the most important metric because it penalizes typing errors. For every error made, five characters (equivalent to one standard word) are deducted from the total typed characters before calculating the final speed.

Net WPM = ROUND( ((Total Characters Typed - (Total Errors × 5)) / 5) / Time Used )

The system also ensures that Net WPM never drops below zero, preventing negative scores.

6. Accuracy Calculation

Accuracy represents the percentage of the user's raw typing speed that remains after accounting for errors.

Accuracy (%) = ROUND( (Net WPM / Gross WPM) × 100 )

If no characters were typed during the test and Gross WPM becomes zero, the system automatically assigns accuracy as 100 percent to prevent division errors.

7. Final Performance Evaluation

Once all calculations are completed, the system generates the final typing performance report. In addition to speed and accuracy, the evaluation may also include:

Most Common Mistake
The system scans the list of errors and identifies the word that the user mistyped most frequently. This helps users understand their weak points.

Qualification Check
For certain typing tests, the system compares Net WPM and Accuracy against the required performance criteria associated with that test category.

Incomplete Test Detection
If the user manually submits the test before reaching the final word of the paragraph, the system may mark the test result as incomplete.

Example Scenario

Consider a typing test with a duration of 1 minute.

Total Characters Typed: 200 (This equals 40 standard words using the 5-character rule.)
During the test the user made:
- 4 spelling mistakes
- 1 extra word
Total Errors: 5

Gross WPM = (200 / 5) / 1 = 40 WPM
Net WPM = ((200 - (5 × 5)) / 5) / 1 = 35 WPM
Accuracy = (35 / 40) × 100 = 88%

This result indicates that although the user typed at a raw speed of 40 WPM, the final effective speed after accounting for errors is 35 WPM with an accuracy of 88 percent.

Understanding these calculations can help users identify areas for improvement and develop better typing habits during practice.
